Road Transportation in New Mexico
New Mexico State roads, the Interstate Highway System and the United States Numbered Highways, fall under the authority of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. New Mexico has altogether 412 state roads.

New Mexico Park and Ride offers over 100 daily departures. The Park and Ride Bus Service operate on all weekdays, except for designated state holidays. The Albuquerque International Sunport is the gateway to the state of New Mexico. The airport, in the year 2014, celebrated 75 years of its service. The airlines that presently serves the Albuquerque International Sunport includes Alaska Airlines, Boutique Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, New Mexico Airlines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and US Airways. The airport has nonstop flights to more than 20 destinations across the country.

Four Corners Regional Airport The Four Corners Regional Airport serves a regional population of more than 100,000. This airport gives service to travelers from four states. Lea County Regional Airport Lea County Regional Airport is operated and owned by the Lea County Government. It is one of the largest airports owned by the Government of Lea County. Rail Transportation in New Mexico
The Rail Division

New Mexico Rail Runner Express
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a commuter rail system that serves the metropolitan areas of Santa Fe and Albuquerque New Mexico. The New Mexico Department of Transportation and the Rio Metro Regional Transit District, regional transportation agency administers the New Mexico Rail Runner Express.

[5] is the main regional transit provider for Sandoval, Bernalillo and Valencia counties. Rio Metro gives transit service between municipalities and across county lines. It also manages the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter rail.

New Class I Railroads
There are two Class I railroads that operates in New Mexico. The two Class I Railroads are BNSF and Union Pacific Railroad (UP). These two railroads operate the two largest railroad networks in North America.
BNSF RailwayBNSF Railway was created in 1995, by the merger of the BN and ATSF. BNSF operates just over 32,500 miles of track, throughout the United States. BNSF has the largest presence of any railroad in the state of New Mexico.
Union Pacific RailroadUnion Pacific Railroad was chartered actually by the United States Congress in the year 1862. It largely gained its present size and form with its purchase of SP in 1996. UP operates just less than 32,000 miles of track, throughout the United States.
Short line Railroads
The Surface Transportation Board (STB) designates five railroads in New Mexico as Class III railroads which is also referred commonly as the short line railroads. Out of five railroads, four are privately owned freight railroads that operate common carrier freight service in New Mexico and the fifth is owned by the New Mexico Transport Department.
The five Short line Railroads include the Southwestern Railroad, Texas, New Mexico Railroad, Arizona Eastern Railway, Santa Fe Southern Railway and Santa Teresa Southern Rail road.
Passenger Railroads
Amtrak or the National Passenger Railroad Corporation operates two long distance routes in the state of New Mexico. The two passenger railroads are the Southwest Chief and the Sunset Limited.
Southwest ChiefThis passenger rail manages one train everyday per direction that links Chicago, Albuquerque, Kansas City, and Los Angeles. The train travels a distance of about 2,256 miles that includes 431 miles within New Mexico.
Sunset LimitedThe Sunset Limited weekly operates three trains per direction that links New Orleans, San Antonio, Houston, Tucson, El Paso, and Los Angeles. It covers a a distance of 1,995 miles including 167 miles within New Mexico.
Private Railroads
New Mexico has two private freight railroads which carry only a single commodity and are not subject to
Federal regulation. The two private railroads are:
Escalante Western RailwayIt is a subsidiary of Western Fuels Association, Inc. The Escalante Western Railway owns and operates a 55 mile network within McKinley County in New Mexico.
Navajo Mine RailroadIt is a 13 mile electrified railway operating within San Juan County in New Mexico. This railroad transports coal from the Navajo Mine to the Four Corners Power Plant.
