Road Transportation in New Mexico


New Mexico State roads, the Interstate Highway System and the United States Numbered Highways, fall under the authority of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. New Mexico has altogether 412 state roads.

New Mexico Park and Ride Bus Service

New Mexico Park and Ride Bus ServiceNew Mexico Park and Ride offers over 100 daily departures. The Park and Ride Bus Service operate on all weekdays, except for designated state holidays. The Park and Ride Bus Service operates on the routes which includes: Santa Fe and Las Vegas (Orange), Santa Fe and Espanola (Red), Santa Fe and Los Alamos (Blue), Espanola and Los Alamos (Green), Santa Fe and Los Alamos (Purple), Moriarty and Albuquerque (Turquoise), Las Cruces and White Sands Missile Range (Silver), Las Cruces and El Paso (Gold), South Capitol Station Shuttle and NM 599 Station Shuttle

The state of New Mexico consists of 25 beautiful scenic byways, which covers around 2,900 miles across a diverse landscape. In fact, eight of the 126 America's Byways are located in the state of New Mexico.

Air Transportation in New Mexico

Flights in New MexicoThe Aviation Division [2] of New Mexico was formed in the year 1963 to work together with all public and private organizations and agencies, federal, state, local and also to support general aviation in the state of New Mexico. The Division also offers planning and technical support to develop and maintain the airport of the State and other elements of the aviation system. Albuquerque International Sunport


Albuquerque International Sunport

The Albuquerque International Sunport is the gateway to the state of New Mexico. The airport, in the year 2014, celebrated 75 years of its service. The airlines that presently serves the Albuquerque International Sunport includes Alaska Airlines, Boutique Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, New Mexico Airlines,  JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and US Airways. The airport has nonstop flights to more than 20 destinations across the country.

Four Corners Regional Airport

The Four Corners Regional Airport serves a regional population of more than 100,000. This airport gives service to travelers from four states. Great Lakes Airlines, a code share partner for United Airlines, provides flights to Denver and Alamosa, CO, and Phoenix and Show Low, AZ.

Lea County Regional Airport

Lea County Regional Airport is operated and owned by the Lea County Government. It is one of the largest airports owned by the Government of Lea County. This airport has three runways and its presently now a FAA certified commercial airport that is served by the United Airlines' affiliate with daily regional jets.

Santa Fe Municipal Airport

Santa Fe Municipal Airport nearly houses 200 based general aviation aircraft and 11 military fixed and rotorwing aircraft. The majority of the based aircraft are single engine, but the airports do have a healthy jet and mutli-engine population.

Roswell International Air Center

The Roswell International Air Center is situated five miles south of the central business district of the City. It is the core of southeastern New Mexico's industrial activity. Earlier this 4,600 acres of land was the the home of Walker Air Force Base which is one of the largest installations operated by the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command.

Rail Transportation in New Mexico

The Rail Division [3] of New Mexico Department of Transportation offers information to public and transit providers on public transit service. In the year 1850, Railroad surveyors visited the state and in the year 1869 the first railroads was incorporated in New Mexico. Apart from the local railroads,[4] the state jointly owns and operates other tourist lines, a heritage narrow-gauge steam railroad, the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railway.

New Mexico Rail Runner Express


The New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a commuter rail system that serves the metropolitan areas of Santa Fe and Albuquerque New Mexico. The New Mexico Department of Transportation and the Rio Metro Regional Transit District, regional transportation agency administers the New Mexico Rail Runner Express.

Rio Metro Regional Transit District

The Rio Metro Regional Transit District [5] is the main regional transit provider for Sandoval, Bernalillo and Valencia counties. Rio Metro gives transit service between municipalities and across county lines. It also manages the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter rail.

Amtrak or National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is a government railroad service system in the United States which offers safe, high quality on-time rail passenger service.  Amtrak manages and operates several trains daily.

New Class I Railroads


Railroads in New Mexico

There are two Class I railroads that operates in New Mexico. The two Class I Railroads are BNSF and Union Pacific Railroad (UP). These two railroads operate the two largest railroad networks in North America.

BNSF Railway

BNSF Railway was created in 1995, by the merger of the BN and ATSF. BNSF operates just over 32,500 miles of track, throughout the United States. BNSF has the largest presence of any railroad in the state of New Mexico.

Union Pacific Railroad

Union Pacific Railroad was chartered actually by the United States Congress in the year 1862. It largely gained its present size and form with its purchase of SP in 1996. UP operates just less than 32,000 miles of track, throughout the United States.

Short line Railroads

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) designates five railroads in New Mexico as Class III railroads which is also referred commonly as the short line railroads. Out of five railroads, four are privately owned freight railroads that operate common carrier freight service in New Mexico and the fifth is owned by the New Mexico Transport Department.

The five Short line Railroads include the Southwestern Railroad, Texas, New Mexico Railroad, Arizona Eastern Railway, Santa Fe Southern Railway and Santa Teresa Southern Rail road.

Passenger Railroads

New Mexico railroadsAmtrak or the National Passenger Railroad Corporation operates two long distance routes in the state of New Mexico. The two passenger railroads are the Southwest Chief and the Sunset Limited.

Southwest Chief

This passenger rail manages one train everyday per direction that links Chicago, Albuquerque, Kansas City, and Los Angeles. The train travels a distance of about 2,256 miles that includes 431 miles within New Mexico.

Sunset Limited

The Sunset Limited weekly operates three trains per direction that links New Orleans, San Antonio, Houston, Tucson, El Paso, and Los Angeles. It covers a a distance of 1,995 miles including 167 miles within New Mexico.

Private Railroads

New Mexico has two private freight railroads which carry only a single commodity and are not subject to New Mexico railroadsFederal regulation. The two private railroads are:

Escalante Western Railway

It is a subsidiary of Western Fuels Association, Inc. The Escalante Western Railway owns and operates a 55 mile network within McKinley County in New Mexico.

Navajo Mine Railroad

It is a 13 mile electrified railway operating within San Juan County in New Mexico. This railroad transports coal from the Navajo Mine to the Four Corners Power Plant.
